Marc-Andre ter Stegen will be a Barcelona player until 2025. The club, despite the fact that his renewal has not yet been signed, is confident that an agreement will be reached to keep the goalkeeper at the Camp Nou. Barcelona have been negotiating with the player’s representatives and talks were ongoing prior to the close of the transfer market on October 5.

The discussions had started long ago, but the COVID-19 outbreak and its subsequent impact on European football caused the talks to be suspended, although they resumed in the early summer. Ter Stegen’s wage demands have meant some difficulties for the Catalans, but the club believes they have found a way to tie him to an extension that will see him continue to be an important part of the team at Camp Nou.

The German has asked for 18 million euros net per season, and the two parties have been seeking a payment formula to meet the player’s demands. Barcelona has asked its players to reduce their salaries for the 2020/21 season due to the reduction budget, in part because of the coronavirus.

The current plan is that Ter Stegen will not receive that full amount in the first years of his new contract, although that money would be compensated in the coming seasons. Barcelona are confident that the goalkeeper will continue to play a significant part of their squad for years to come, making them more willing to meet their salary expectations in some way.

The 28-year-old’s current contract in Catalonia ends on June 30, 2022. He has played 236 games for the club since arriving from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2014.
