Running mate of the Democratic National Congress (NDC) standard-bearer, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has pledged that the new NDC government will pass the Affirmative Action Bill.

Commemorating International Girl’s Day 2020, she explained in a statement that the bill, when it becomes law, will address the issues that impede the progress of girls in the country.

He pointed out that it is time for both genders to be given equal opportunities and for that to materialize, it would require the effort of all Ghanaians.

“We must reflect on the promise of equal opportunity at all levels of education for girls in Ghana, and how obstacles such as era poverty deny them. We must recognize the pervasive risks of sexual and physical violence that Ghanaian girls face at school, in their communities and even in their own homes.

“We must recognize how outdated social norms limit options for girls, how harmful cultural practices protect sexual predators at the expense of victims, and how our justice system often fails girls, too,” she said.

The former Minister of Education also promised that reforms will be introduced to address the problems of sexual harassment directly in schools, workplaces, among others.

These are not political promises, but moral obligations. Let us not fall short of these commitments to Ghanaian girls, as that in itself is a measure of our national character, ”he added.

Ms. Opoku-Agyemang also acknowledged the difficulties that some girls have to endure due to the Covid-19 pandemic, adding that the country should not “fail” them but support them with all necessary means to resuscitate them.
