The public has been advised to check the daily and weekly weather forecast from the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) website as the rainy season reaches its peak.

This would allow them to plan their activities safely and comfortably, without unwanted interference from sudden rains.

Felicity Ahafianyo, GMet’s interim officer in charge of forecasting and analysis, said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, following Saturday’s rain, which left various parts of Accra, especially areas within Kasoa and Weija, very flooded.

He said that with the southern part of the country in its second rainy season, rains can be expected at any time, hence the need to be aware of the weather forecast at all times.

Ms. Ahafianyo observed that one of the main reasons for the flooding during the rainy season was poor drainage systems, adding that it was necessary to involve all relevant organizations and agencies in the country, in reviewing the entire system of country drainage.

He said this would greatly reduce flooding during rains.

The senior meteorologist urged people living in flood-prone areas to relocate or remove valuables that could be destroyed by flooding for the time being.

Ms. Ahafianyo also appealed to people who had houses and other types of structures on the waterways to relocate these structures.

“You could even erect them with support structures like pillars, so they don’t settle into the waterway and cause preventable flooding,” he said.

This year’s rainy season is expected to be normal or slightly below normal and is expected to end in November, the GMet said.

Last Saturday’s downpour, which started early in the morning and lasted for about four hours in parts of southern Ghana, caused heavy flooding in several areas, including Kasoa, Weija and Adenta.

The floods made it impossible for several people to leave or enter its facilities.
