Akwatia MP Mercy Adu-Gyamfi, popularly known as Ama Sey, has officially announced her retirement from the parliamentary race as an independent candidate.
This comes after the Akwatia lawmaker decided to go independent after losing in the party’s parliamentary primaries that were held in June 2020.
The deputy was expected to submit her nomination form on Friday, but reversed her decision stating that many dignitaries had advised her, including President Akufo-Addo, his wife Rebecca Akufo-Addo, the Okyenhene and some pastors.
Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, the deputy revealed that although she asked the executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that she may have been misled, she was ignored.
This, she said, made her followers unhappy, thus encouraging her to compete as an independent candidate.
“If you have heard today that Ama Sey has not submitted the parliamentary forms, it is because of the dignitaries who advised me to reconsider,” he said.
The deputy also appealed to her supporters and residents of Akwatia to vote en masse for the PNP and keep Akufo-Addo as president in the December elections.
