Some West Lands residents in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency who were affected by Saturday’s heavy downpour have rebuked the local assembly’s firm resistance to the help of an aspiring member of parliament for the area, a few months ago.
In June 2020, the parliamentary candidate of the Democratic National Congress (NDC) for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo, was ordered to stop dredging gutters in the township.
“They told me to stop the work I am doing and to report to their office to formally apply for permission to dredge the gutter at West Legon,” he told GhanaWeb in an interview.
However, the drain, which residents say has since become a development nightmare, was left unattended after Dumelo was ordered to stop working.
After more than 4 hours of torrential rain in parts of Accra on Saturday, most of the residents in the area in question were left homeless as their houses filled with floodwaters.
Affected residents explained in a video shared on Twitter by Mr. Dumelo that no member of the Assembly or Member of Parliament, Lydia Seyram Alhassan has visited the area.
A resident ranted; “John Dumelo started working here but they came to stop him… but they didn’t even help us after they stopped him. Now look at how we have been submerged in the flood. We need help now … we have changed our minds now because the authorities have no help for us … “
“Every time it rains we suffer … not even the acting deputy was able to visit us here because she could not access the bridge. They have no respect for us here… ”added another.
On June 10, John Dumelo began facilitating the dredging of a large gutter in West Legon. The decision to begin work on dredging the gutter, he said, was informed by a promise he made to the community when he made a visit to assess the inconvenience residents face every time it rains.
(Below are more reactions from residents as they vent their spleen on social media):
How long can we keep leaving our people of the western land in this situation when it rains? When we tried to fix this, we were detained, but those who detained us have not done anything about it at Ayawaso West yet. Trust me, I’ll fix this when I’m chosen! # change is on the way # idey4u pic.twitter.com/3tuggpAYgB
