Majority Leader of Parliament, Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has described the unfortunate death of Mfantseman’s MP, Hon. Ekow Quansah Hayford as a major blow to the ruling party.
The MP was reportedly shot dead by suspected road robbers at dawn on Friday.
According to Peace FM’s correspondent in the central region, Ibrahim Dadzie, he was shot when he was returning from a campaign trip.
The thieves, according to the report, shot the driver of his car after he refused to stop when instructed to do so. They then reportedly dragged the policeman out of the car and began questioning him.
Speaking on Okay FM’s Ade Akye Abia morning show, the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs said the late Hon. Ekow Quansah Hayford gave the ruling New Patriotic Party high hopes of retaining the Mfantseman constituency seat for a long time after recover it from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“What I know is that the Mfantseman constituency used to be in the hands of Asamoah Boateng from NPP and since he lost the seat, it has been difficult for the NPP to regain the constituency and it was this man who won us the seat. .
“I remember when he came to Parliament, I congratulated him on having regained our seat. He is a local politician and the people of the constituency hold him in high esteem, so he gave us hope that we will run the constituency for an extended period, but unfortunately this has happened, ”he lamented.
In praise of the late Hon. Ekow Hayford, the Suame legislator, he described the deceased as someone very personable and a true gentleman in Parliament.
“In Parliament, he is someone quiet; he doesn’t speak much in Parliament but every time he gets up to speak in Parliament he was always on point and therefore all the time used to encourage him to work hard in Parliament because he shouldn’t just satisfy his constituents But in Parliament, you must register firmly in order to lead the constituency for long. He is someone who is not at fault in the Chamber and that is why I say that what happened is very bad ”, he paid tribute to the late deputy.
He noted that time is not on the ruling party’s side as the constitution will not allow the party to sympathize with the grieving family under normal circumstances, as the party must quickly come up with a replacement.
“Our constitution states that if we are submitting a nomination and in the process one of those people who are supposed to submit dies, there must be a period of 21 days before the affected party can name a replacement. What it means now is that we have to get organized in a very short time and find a replacement for the Mfantseman constituency. “
“The sad thing about all this is that you don’t even have time to feel enough for the family; We have to find a replacement in a hurry and it is worrying, ”he lamented.
