Edinson Cavani has revealed how Ander Herrera’s advice pushed him to make a last minute move to Manchester United on the day of the deadline.
The Uruguayan had become a free agent after leaving Paris Saint-Germain earlier this year, and had been linked to players such as Atlético de Madrid and Benfica.
However, it was United who managed to convince the forward to join them in a free practice that saw him put pen to paper on a two-year deal at Old Trafford.
And the 33-year-old revealed that his personal chat with former United midfielder Herrera played an important role in making his move to the club happen.
“I spoke a lot with Ander, as well as with other teammates, like Angel Di Maria, with whom I was also in Paris,” Cavani told United’s official website. I was really reaching the last minute and I called Ander to chat.
‘I have a lot of admiration for Ander, for the type of person he is, and I had the feeling that his words were going to help me, telling me a little about how he was at United.
‘So yes, it is true that after I finished talking to Ander, we reached an agreement here with the club.
“I hadn’t known Ander for a long time, but we formed and enjoyed a close friendship during that time at PSG and today we are still very good teammates.”
Herrera revealed earlier this week what he told the Uruguayan international in his phone call.
He asked me for advice. I told him that this was one of those teams that you couldn’t say no to, ‘Herrera told Cadena Ser.
“It is a pity that he cannot take advantage of the fans. Old Trafford is unique. ‘
United completed the signing of Cavani as the Premier League club left late to reinforce Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad before the transfer window closed on Monday night.
The Red Devils had been strongly linked to a move for Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho, although the £ 108 million price tag for the Bundesliga winger proved beyond United in this window.
But the arrival of Cavani should give United a more physical advantage alongside Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood.
Cavani, who has joined a deal worth £ 210,000 a week, said after his move: “Manchester United are one of the best clubs in the world so it is a real honor to be here.
“I have worked very hard during my free time and I am looking forward to competing and representing this incredible club.”
