Mariano Díaz returned to training in Valdebebas on Thursday for the first time since he underwent an operation for tonsillitis. As you can see from the before and after photos of the Real Madrid forward, he has lost quite a bit of weight in the last three weeks.
After the operation, Mariano was unable to eat solid food for more than 10 days, seriously affecting his diet in the process. Right now, he weighs five kilograms less than when he had the surgery initially and eight kilograms less than he had normally been.
The former Lyon striker suffered from tonsillitis and the condition returned year after year. This year, he and Real Madrid decided to operate on him because the problem was affecting his muscle mass. Weight loss has weakened the 27-year-old, but he is on an established recovery program with the club that is designed to get him back in top shape.
The international break has come at the right time for him, as it allows him to catch up with the rest of his teammates while they are away. Mariano has not had much luck this year. His positive coronavirus test kept him out of the Champions League in August and he returned from vacation with some fitness issues.
Looking to the future
Mariano still believes he can play his role in advancing Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid squad. The striker hasn’t had much playing time since the Frenchman returned to the hot seat at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.
Things changed in March when Mariano was given a few minutes on the pitch and scored against Barcelona in the Classic. After the confinement, he also participated in Real Madrid’s matches against Real Sociedad, Real Mallorca and Getafe. During the summer, there were several teams interested in signing Mariano, such as Benfica, but the player did not want to leave Real.
