Minister of Works and Housing, Samuel Atta Akyea.
The Housing Minister has revealed that the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is questioning his predecessor and other Mahama-era ministers for allegedly ‘inflating’ 1,500 units of Saglemi’s affordable housing projects.
According to Samuel Atta-Akyea, the Ghana Surveyors Institution has submitted its audit report on the Saglemi Housing project and his Ministry has forwarded the findings to the CID for action.
It stated that Collins Dauda and other officials cited in the alleged corrupt practice always report to the CID to assist in investigations.
“I have heard Jane-John’s argument that [NPP] we have abandoned Saglemi, but we have not abandoned the projects, Saglemi is tainted with embezzlement, there is no dispute about it.
“And I could tell you that the Ghana Surveyors Institution has published a conclusive report to the effect that Saglemi is a scam and that the amount of money that has been spent on the project exceeds 100 million dollars and the housing structures are they have finished. They are not up to the money they have indicated.
“So I’m not here to embarrass anyone, but yes [NPP] Let’s not go through the legalities of it, how we continue, so now that we have delivered the GIS report to the CID, we can hope to complete the project, ”he said.
Speaking to a press section in parliament on Thursday, Atta-Akyea promised that the government will soon resume the work project after the CID completes its work on the audit findings.
“I can’t be too sure that it will be ready by the end of the year, but it will be extremely good if the work continues. Because we have pushed a lot to make sure Saglemi is not abandoned, ”he said.
Background
The 2,172 acres that the Saglemi housing project is located on were purchased in 2002 during the era of President John Agyekum Kufuor.
On August 15, 2012, President John Evans Atta Mills gave executive approval to the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing to implement the project.
The project involved the construction of 5,000 housing units for sale to the public through a mortgage provided by Ghana Home Loans.
The project was implemented by Constrastora OAS Ghana Limited through a buyer loan of up to $ 200 million.
The first phase of 1,500 housing units was due to be delivered on March 31, 2016, but was extended until August 31.
