The leadership of the opposition Democratic National Congress (NDC) in the New Juaben North constituency in the Eastern Region has chosen Emmanuel Kwaku Asante to replace the late Sampson Oti Boateng as the party’s parliamentary candidate for the 2020 elections.
Sampson Oti Boateng passed away on Wednesday after a brief illness.
Asante, a former West Akim Municipal Executive Director (MCE) in the Rawlings administration, lost to the deceased candidate by 316 to 229 votes during the 2019 NDC primaries to become the party’s candidate for the 7th parliamentary elections. from December.
Mr. Oti Boateng was supposed to compete with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the constituency, Kwasi Adjei-Boateng, who is also Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development.
In an interview with Citi News, the constituency secretary, Anthony Kwame Asemdaho, indicated that, although in mourning, the party had to move forward to meet the deadline for submitting nomination forms.
“We had a meeting this morning, that is, the national and regional presidents and the executives of the constituency. We agreed that the late Ntim’s competitor in the primaries will run as the New Juaben North parliamentary candidate and we hope that by the close of tomorrow, he will present [his nomination forms]. ”
“Normally when competitors lose elections, you no longer see them participate in party commitments, but in Asante’s case, he has been involved since his defeat. So I think it is in their place that intervenes in their place, “he added.
Asemdaho further revealed that a party delegation will go to Oti Boateng’s hometown in Fomena in the Ashanti region to commiserate with the family and finalize the details of the funeral.
“Tomorrow morning, a delegation will go to their hometown in Fomena to meet with family members. At the close of tomorrow, we will see what comes out of the meeting with the family members ”.
