President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, once again, reaffirmed his administration’s support for any private company willing to help advance the country’s progress.

“I want to reiterate that I am particularly interested in helping any private company that is willing to advance the progress of this country,” he said.

The president made the claim when he mowed the lawn to begin work on the Upper East solid waste treatment facility at Sherigu in the Bolgatanga East district on Thursday (October 8, 2020).

Camaraderie

The facility is a collaboration between Zoomlion Ghana Limited (ZGL) and its partners, Komptech, in association with the Government of Ghana.

With the exception of the Kumasi and Accra composting and recycling plants that were commissioned and operational, work was underway at similar facilities in regions such as Ahafo, Bono, Bono East, Eastern, Western and Western North. Therefore, the Upper East plant brings to eight the number of regions that have so far benefited from Zoomlion’s only region, a solid waste treatment plant.

According to President Akufo-Addo, the waste treatment facilities in the regions were very important, adding that they will help to deal with waste management in the country.

In this regard, he applauded the collaboration between the Jospong Group of Companies (JGC) and the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources (MSWR) for their efforts to ensure that the 16 regions have a stake in the plant.

He indicated that the compost recycling plants will help safeguard the sanctity of “our environment” and ensure that Ghanaians are always healthy.

The president went on to describe the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Mrs. Cecilia Abena Dapaah, and the Chief Executive Officer of JGC, who is also the CEO of ZGL, Mr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, as “two exceptional Ghanaians that we must continue to support ”.

The event was part of the president’s two-day tour of the Upper East region.

The Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, revealed that the Upper East generates 782 tons of solid waste per day. Therefore, he explained that this would be a very good source of raw materials for the composting and recycling plant to be built in the region.

“There is a need for the private sector to complete the value chain in the collection and transport of solid waste in the region,” he said.

A clean environment, he said, will help promote tourism “for which the Upper East stands out.”

Ms. Dapaah tasked the assemblies in the region with working effectively with Zoomlion to ensure that solid waste was properly collected and sent to the treatment plant.

Jospong Group of Companies CEO Joseph Siaw Agyepong said that upon completion, the facility will offer 75 and 205 direct and indirect jobs, respectively, to youth in the region.

He commended Sherigu Chief and Bolga East City Council Chief Executive Officer (MCE) for making a 100-acre piece of land available for the project.

“… work is starting immediately, the president mows the lawn and the installation will be completed in four months,” he revealed.

At the end of his speech, he showed a four-minute video of how the plant would work in solid waste management.

Sherigu Traditional Area Chief Naba Thomas Aluman Apasinaba II, for his part, expressed his gratitude to the president for keeping all his campaign promises in the run-up to the 2016 elections.

He said that social intervention programs such as the free SHS, Planting for Food and Jobs, NABCo, among others, have had a positive impact on the lives of his people.

He took the opportunity to appeal to the president to intervene to ensure that stalled state projects in his area, including road networks, were completed.

In a brief comment, the Upper East Regional Minister, Ms. Tangoba Abayage, highlighted that her region had witnessed what she described as “monumental” development projects under the three-and-a-half-year administration of President Nana Akufo-Addo. .

“There is no corner of the Upper East that has not witnessed any development under the Akufo-Addo administration,” he said.
