Chris Hughton has twice won promotion to the Premier League, most recently with Brighton in 2017

New boss Chris Hughton says Nottingham Forest has everything in place to win promotion, despite a four-game losing streak this season and a record of just three wins in 19 championship games.

The 61-year-old former Brighton and Newcastle manager replaced Sabri Lamouchi on Tuesday.

“The starting position is very good,” he told BBC Radio Nottingham.

“There are clubs that have reached the Premier League, and if I look at the facilities or the quality of the team, it could be less than what we have here.”

Hughton is Forest’s thirteenth full-time manager appointment since Billy Davies’s first stint at the club ended in the summer of 2011.

Former Tottenham and Republic of Ireland right-back Hughton has already appointed his former Brighton number two Paul Trollope as assistant boss and says his immediate task is to restore confidence after last season’s capitulation.

The Reds looked almost certain of reaching the play-offs last season, before a dismal ending that culminated in a 4-1 home loss to Stoke City.

A choppy transfer window followed, with 13 new faces arriving, but there was no pickup in form, with the four-loss sequence extending Lamouchi’s winless league run to 10 before his departure.

Hughton said he was excited about the “opportunity” at City Ground.

“It felt good,” he said. “I am lucky to run a great club.

“It’s a good squad and a team that did very well last season and missed the play-offs. The starting position is very good. It was a difficult start to this season, but there are many factors.

“The roster has been expanded, so there certainly can’t be any complaints that the starting team doesn’t want to improve the team.

Others have tried and it hasn’t happened, but at some point this club will be in the Premier League.

“I’m here to help with that process. Ultimately this club, the size it is with its ambitions, has to make it to the Premier League.”

“The most important thing now is to start scoring points and have a bit of confidence in the team. It can happen, that the effects of last season have lasted until this season. My initial job is to change that and then go from there.

“Promotion has to be the goal of this club and my process starts here.

“Everything with the players has to do with positivity. You can’t allow yourself to be otherwise. I have a good squad and a great squad.”
