Manchester City are making great progress with Kevin De Bruyne in signing a new five-year contract, increasing the possibility that he will end his club career.

Sportsmail understands that the central midfielder is interested in signing a two-year extension to an existing contract that expires in 2023.

De Bruyne is expected to put pen to paper in a deal worth more than £ 300,000 a week in base wages, with additional bonuses built into the top.

City had first planned talks with the 29-year-old towards the end of last season, but they were delayed after the Premier League campaign was halted.

De Bruyne and the lawyers representing him are believed to have been in talks with the club’s hierarchy for the past few weeks.

City have wanted to reward their biggest stars for showing loyalty to the club during their legal battle over a two-year ban from the Champions League imposed by UEFA earlier in the year.

It was later annulled on appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport and De Bruyne will become the first to underline his commitment.

Although he still had two and a half years left on his current contract, retaining the Premier League and PFA Player of the Year is a significant boost.

Should he stay for the entirety of this contract, the Belgian international, based in the Northwest with his wife and three children, would be 34 years old.

De Bruyne was surprisingly overlooked for the captaincy in a recent player and staff vote after David Silva left Etihad Stadium, but is seen as the obvious replacement when current patron Fernandinho leaves.
