The heads of some communities in the Greater Accra region have threatened a 4-day demonstration against the government over land that was confiscated by the state but never used.

According to the chiefs, all efforts to hand over the land to the owners have not been successful.

A statement issued by the chiefs said: “After a series of petitions to the government to reverse their lands, the president finally acted on his request asking the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Land Commission to ensure a smooth release, but unfortunately, the minister of the sector, Asoma Cheremeh, is adding reluctance to the liberation process ”.

The chiefs continued: “We would like to make it clear to the president that our part of the land that he asked the Ministry of Lands and the Land Commission to hand over to us has already supposedly been sold by the caretaker.”

The chiefs also noted that “compensation has never been paid for the land since the state acquired it in 1970.

“Since our last meeting with the Ministry of Lands, which took place on September 22, 2020, we have not heard from the minister again, even though he told us that we will hear from him.”

The chiefs reminded the government that they are indigenous to “Kweiman”, so “they are not prepared to be relocated to different lands that belong to different communities.”

The chiefs further noted: “We would also like to inform you that plans are being implemented with other neighboring communities facing similar challenges to embark on an ongoing four-day demonstration to protect our territorial integrity.”

He added: “We will inform you of the start date of this demonstration as soon as possible.

“What is needed to embark on such an exercise is to notify the police but not ask for their permission; and we certainly will. ”
