Man Utd ‘rejected Edinson Cavani transfer seven years ago’ after three voyages of exploration

Manchester United reportedly turned down the opportunity to sign Edinson Cavani seven years ago, after then-manager David Moyes made three separate scouting trips to see the Uruguayan forward.

Cavani joined United on a free transfer on the deadline day after leaving Paris Saint-Germain following the expiration of his contract in the French capital.

The 33-year-old will try to make an impact similar to that of former PSG teammate Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who had a successful stint at Old Trafford in the twilight of his career.

But Cavani could have joined the Red Devils much earlier.

According to The Athletic, Ed Woodward was interested in making Cavani a star signing in the summer of 2013 after Sir Alex Ferguson won the last of his Premier League titles and retired.

Cavani has joined United, but it could have happened much earlier

Moyes replaced his fellow Scotsman, but was apparently unimpressed by what he saw after three trips to the then 26-year-old scout.

Instead, Cavani switched from Napoli to PSG and scored 200 goals in 301 games for the Parisians.

But now he has made the switch to the Theater of Dreams, where he will pocket £ 210,000 a week after tax.

Cavani gives Ole Gunnar Solskjaer another attacking option to add three regular forwards Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford.

Martial faces a three-game ban after being sent off in United’s 6-1 humiliation against Tottenham, but Cavani will not be available to make his debut against Newcastle when he returns to the top flight after the international break.

He is isolated for fifteen days, which means that his debut could be against the former PSG in the Champions League.

Manchester United are looking to chart their way back to the top. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already signed Donny van de Beek, but Jadon Sancho remains Manchester United’s number one target.

After joining United, Cavani said: “Manchester United are one of the best clubs in the world, so it is a real honor to be here.

“I have worked very hard during my free time and I am looking forward to competing and representing this incredible club.

“I have played in front of some of the most passionate football fans in my career and I know it will be the same in Manchester.

“I can’t wait to experience the atmosphere of Old Trafford when the fans are sure to return.”

“ I hope to continue writing my little story within the football book and I know that is why my approach must remain the same as always: work, work, work.

“I have had a conversation with the manager and this has increased my desire to wear this beautiful shirt.”
