Real Madrid won another game thanks to the heroics of Thibaut Courtois, who has been the outstanding player in the first four games of the season.
Despite not playing their absolute best football to start their 2020-2021 La Liga campaign without preseason, Real Madrid are undefeated. After drawing at the Anoeta Stadium against Real Sociedad, the meringues have defeated Real Betis, Real Valladolid and Levante in three games in which they have been tested. They have also had to endure injuries from key players like Toni Kroos and Dani Carvajal.
During the first four games of the season, Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has been the outstanding player for Los Blancos. He has made a brilliant save after a brilliant save, including an impossible save from a detour against Levante in which his body went the other way but stuck his leg out to keep a clean sheet.
Sergio Canales’s brilliant pass aside, Courtois has scored a clean sheet in three of Real Madrid’s four games so far. And even against Los Verdiblancos at Benito Villamarín, Courtois continued to play well and made great saves to keep Real Madrid in the game.
Courtois was already critical to Real’s success in 2019-2020. Without him and his return to form after October, Real Madrid would not have won La Liga. It’s that easy. He led the league in goals against 90, save percentage and clean sheet percentage with a clean sheet in more than half of his games.

This season, Courtois is already in the top five in save percentage, one of three goalkeepers with three clean sheets, and allowing just half a goal every 90 minutes for Los Merengues. Basically, he hasn’t missed a beat.
Those stats are impressive, but they don’t do justice to what we’ve seen on the field. Courtois has rescued Real Madrid repeatedly during the first five days of La Liga, making saves that few goalkeepers on this planet could. His reflexes and athleticism have stood out in a big way for the club, and he has withstood the challenge of any counterattack.
Real Madrid can thank Courtois more than anyone for being the first place in La Liga heading into the international break with 10 points from just four games. Sevilla and Barcelona are in the mix with seven points out of three, having tied, but Los Blancos are on top, for now.

Without Thibaut Courtios, it is impossible that they would be in this position after four matches. He has been very important again for Real Madrid in 2020-2021 so far.
