A group calling itself the Concerned Tertiary Students of GIJ (CTSG), has opposed the increase in fees of some tertiary institutions in the country.
The group insists that several students are likely to drop out of school due to increased fees for the 2020/2021 academic year.
A statement from the group noted that, “The Ghana Institute of Journalism and the University of Ghana are facing a respective fee increase of 5% and 12% for the upcoming 2020/2021 academic year with signs of increase from other tertiary institutions. “.
“More students are about to drop out of school due to such an inconsiderate decision,” the group added.
Thus, CTSG demanded government intervention citing the monetary challenges brought on by students and their parents by the coronavirus pandemic.
Regarding the Ghana Institute of Journalism, the group said: “There has been no
official communication from the management to students about the increase in fees. However, this increase, called as proposed, has circulated on student platforms and has also been declared on each student’s academic portal ”.
The group claimed that GIJ students have been given until October 9, 2020 to pay fees.
The group insisted that such action is a “form of exploitation and should be treated as such by all.”
CTSG in its statement urged the authorities to rescind the decision to increase the fees, officially notify the students and extend the deadline for the anticipated reduction of fees.
“We also ask the Government of Ghana and the Ministry of Education to listen to the plea of the tertiary education students and respond affirmatively to the request for a reduction in the fees of the higher education students,” the group said in the statement.
