President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has told the president of the Electoral Commission (EC), Ms. Jean Mensa, that she will not be interested in the ‘skewed results’ of the December 7, 2020 elections.
The president’s comment stems from several suspicions by the major opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) that the ruling New Patriotic Party (PNP) is in bed with the EC to rig the December elections in favor of the ruling party and the president.
But when submitting her nomination forms at the electoral management body’s headquarters in Accra on Tuesday, October 6, 2020, Nana Akufo-Addo emphasized that she is not interested in fraudulent elections.
He called on the EC president and her colleagues to be fair and transparent in the conduct of the December elections.
The president said: “We are counting on you to be the referee and keep the balance evenly for all contestants. What the people of Ghana hope is that the December 7 election will be an election that takes place in peace, freedom, security and transparency so that the election results reflect the will of the people of Ghana.
“Elections should not be decided by you or the officials who work for you. You are the referees of the contest.
“The election is supposed to be decided by the people of Ghana and we hope that the arrangements you have established will allow the people of Ghana to manifest their will on December 7 and elect the next government of the fourth republic.
“So far, the work you have done has given the majority of the people of our country considerable confidence that in you and in the leadership of the Electoral Commission we have people committed to a free, fair, credible and transparent process. . process.
“We hope that this will mark the development of the December 7 elections. I am not interested in any crooked results. I don’t want to be elected president by deception.
“I look forward to a contest that will be conducted fairly, so that if indeed, by the will of the almighty, I am again, the choice of the people of Ghana, it will be one that has been freely and openly demonstrated.
“I want to thank you very much for the opportunity this morning and what we all pray for is that the best one wins.”
Nana Akufo-Addo’s top contender, Mr. John Mahama, at a recent press conference, reiterated that he and his party, the NDC, will not accept the results of the December elections if the process is flawed.
Addressing journalists on Thursday, September 24, 2020, about the party’s concerns with the credibility of the provisional voter registry as it went through the display process at the time, the NDC flag bearer said: “We at the NDC have shown restraint at all times in this electoral process ”.
“Even now, we are committed to doing it.
“But let me notify you once again that we will not accept the results of a flawed election,” Mahama warned.
“We will certainly not look to, nor will we shirk our civic responsibility and allow the EC, either through malice or sheer incompetence, to usurp the mandate of the people in the December 7 elections.
“The EC must take immediate steps to rectify and sanitize the registry and re-display it, so that the voting public and all interested parties have the opportunity to verify their data in the voter registry before it is finalized,” he said.
He told party supporters that: “This moment requires us to act with patriotic zeal to preserve the zeal and stability of our beloved nation Ghana.”
“The true will of the people must triumph,” Mahama noted.
