Man Utd Signs Former PSG Striker Cavani – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Marks, Results

Cavani joined PSG from Napoli in 2013 and helped them win six Ligue 1 titles

Manchester United have signed former Paris St-Germain forward Edinson Cavani on a free transfer.

The 33-year-old Uruguayan international, who left PSG at the end of June, has signed a one-year contract.

Cavani has scored 341 goals in 556 club games, including a record 200 in 301 appearances for the French giants. He also has 50 goals in 116 Uruguay matches.

One of his first matches for United could be against PSG in the Champions League group stage match on October 20.

Before that, United will face Newcastle United in the Premier League on October 17, the first game after the international break.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men are 16th in the table, having accumulated just three points in their first three league games.

They were beaten 6-1 at home by Tottenham on Sunday.

“Manchester United are one of the best clubs in the world, so it is a real honor to be here,” said Cavani. “I have worked very hard during my free time and I am looking forward to competing and representing this incredible club.

“I have played in front of some of the most passionate football fans in my career and I know it will be the same in Manchester. I can’t wait to experience the atmosphere of Old Trafford, when the fans are sure to return.”

“I really want to continue writing my little story in the football book and I know that is why my approach has to remain the same as always: work, work, work. I have had a conversation with the coach and this has increased my desire to wear this beautiful shirt. “

It is understood that Cavani’s salary package does not go beyond the club’s salary structure.

Cavani left PSG in a cloud after a disagreement with striker Neymar and feels he has more to give to European football.

United manager Solskjaer said the forward was “an experienced professional who always gives his all for his team.”

“His scoring record with the club and the national team is fantastic and we are delighted to sign a player of his caliber,” he added.

“He will bring energy, power, leadership and a great mentality to the squad but, most importantly, he will bring goals.

“He has had a brilliant career so far, winning trophies in almost every club he has played for, and he still has a lot more to give at the highest level.

“The opportunity for our young players to learn from one of Europe’s top scorers in the last 10 years is fantastic and will really benefit them in the future.”

He is not the first high-profile European striker in his 30 years that United have signed in hopes of extending their scoring prowess.

Former Swedish forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic proved to be a canny acquisition, scoring 29 times in 53 appearances in two spells between 2016 and 2018.

Colombian Radamel Falcao was less successful, scoring four goals in 29 games in 2014-15.

Cavani, who has the option to extend his contract for one year, will provide an experienced forward option for United and competition for younger forwards Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood.

Analysis: Will it improve United or will it be another high-profile failure?

Simon Stone from BBC Sport

Given the turnout of most of the big names United have signed in the past six years, fans can be forgiven for feeling somewhat disappointed at the prospect of signing Cavani.

Radamel Falcao, Alexis Sánchez, Angel di Maria and Bastian Schweinsteiger arrived at Old Trafford with great fanfare, with enormous reputations, and failed disastrously at enormous cost. Why, they argue, Cavani will be different?

The answer will only come when Cavani starts playing. But United feel that the manner of their departure from PSG leaves them something to prove.

The key element is how Solskjaer will use Cavani and which place is in danger.

United’s game schedule is packed. They have 10 consecutive games on weekdays from mid-October until after Christmas. It is impossible for a single player to participate in all these games.

Cavani offers an option. He’s more of a natural number nine than any other forward on United’s books and his forward instinct can put defenses on the back foot more than has been the case in the first two Premier League games.

Furthermore, with the arrival of Donny van de Beek, Solskjaer now has options not only in terms of personnel but also training.

People should respect the name Edinson Cavani more. He is world class.

I know it is 33 years old, but it still has the highest quality. He is exactly the player Manchester United needs right now.

Press from the front; score goals.

It will not be part of a five-year plan, but rather as a temporary resource to give United more time to bring in players in the coming seasons. He will be a huge player for Manchester United.

‘It’s something to get excited about’

John Bennett of the BBC World Service

The way this move has happened and the timing will no doubt leave United fans asking more questions about the club’s recruiting strategy, but focusing solely on the player. Seeing Cavani in the United jersey is something to get excited about.

His quality is not in doubt: 341 goals and 65 assists in 556 club games speak for themselves.

Last season was a disappointment, but it seemed out of Cavani’s hands as he appeared to have been pushed aside by PSG in the final year of his contract. Many PSG fans (and indeed Thiago Silva) were upset by the way they treated him. His father accused PSG of disrespect for his son.

His attitude is also a huge plus. Cavani is a very competitive person, works hard on and off the field, is highly respected and will be a positive influence on Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford, who can surely only learn from someone with Cavani’s experience.

He will also have something to prove after his difficult senior year and his difficult summer trying to find a new club. Can you imagine how motivated he will be when United take on PSG in the Champions League?

The big question, of course, is his age and his physical form. At 33, can you deliver the numbers you used to have in a congested Premier League season? That’s the big question. But if United brings him closer to their best, Cavani should be a huge advantage after a very difficult start to the season.
