Australia’s Ambassador to Ghana, Andrew Gregory, says that “Ghana must have strict laws to regulate mining activities” considering the terrible impact of illegal mining on bodies of water and the environment.

According to him, the government must do well to “protect its land and bodies of water” by imposing strict sanctions that will deter illegal miners from engaging in galamsey activities, which for years have contaminated important bodies of water in places where these minerals are mined. .

On the basis of illegal mining in Ghana, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has indicated that his government is still committed to fighting illegal mining.

Speaking at the Yendi Water Supply Project lawn mowing ceremony on July 29, 2020, he stated that his government will “continue to wage war and intensify our determination to curb the activities of illegal miners (galamseyers), the winners sand and agriculture along the shores of our bodies of water, leading to their contamination “

However, the Australian ambassador in an interview about ‘GhanAkoma’ on Akoma FM advised the government to take the measures implemented by his home country Australia, which is currently the second largest gold producer in the world to ensure proper mining activities.

Gregory also spoke out against the involvement of minors in mining camps, adding that “it is bad for children to work on mining sites because they will be exposed to deadly chemicals like the mercury used for galamsey.”
