The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP), Ms Cynthia Morrison, expressed her happiness for the Online Child Protection Complaint Portal, saying that the portal would help protect the country’s children from scammers and abusers from Internet.
She unveiled this at the opening of National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) 2020 and the official launch of the Child Online Protection Portal (COP) at the Accra Digital Center on Thursday, October 1, 2020.
According to her, due to the adversities of COVID-19, many children these days use the Internet a lot for research, for classes and for socializing, which makes them prone to child sexual abuse materials.
He noted that many of the social media tools many children use were not designed for them, putting many children at risk for cybersecurity problems.
Cyber security achievement
National cybersecurity adviser Albert Antwi-Boasiako, for his part, said the government is making progress in its fight against cybercrime.
He added that there is a commitment to improve the safety of businesses and citizens, although the COVID-19 pandemic has had devastating effects on people and the economy.
“While efforts at the government and political level are important, we do not underestimate the need to engage and empower citizens to ensure that efforts are made to raise awareness among our citizens, who are the ultimate beneficiaries of the Center’s work. . Indeed, the National Cyber Security Center will continue to play the role that it has been playing since its inception; to continue implementing measures aimed at securing Ghana’s digital travel, ”he said.
He added: “Ghana has also been recognized for its cybersecurity development by international partners, including the Council of Europe, the World Bank, the World Economic Forum, UNICEF and the ECOWAS Commission, among others, and the Commission on the ECOWAS has requested Ghana to lead cybersecurity efforts. in the African subregion. Ghana was recently nominated to serve on the Independent Advisory Committee (IAC) of the Global Internet Forum to Combat Terrorism (GIFCT), with Ghana being the only African country. “
UNICEF applauds
UNICEF Country Representative Ms Anne-Claire Dufay said that since the emergence of COVID-19, children accessing the Internet have increased globally.
UNICEF, he noted, was working with relevant organizations and institutions such as the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) to ensure the protection of children on the Internet.
He mentioned the Ghanaians Against Child Abuse (GACA) campaign as one of the interventions in which UNICEF is working together with other development partners and relevant government institutions and NGOs to ensure the protection of Ghanaian children and adolescents.
Cyber Security Bill
In a speech read on behalf of the Minister of Communications, Alexander Abban indicated that the National Cybersecurity Center has drafted a cybersecurity bill to establish a regulatory framework for the development of cybersecurity in Ghana, consistent with current trends and the best practices around the world.
The bill, said the deputy communications minister, is currently before the cabinet for consideration and is expected to be approved this year by parliament.
“To further improve the cybersecurity regulatory regime, my Ministry has submitted a cybersecurity bill to the Cabinet for consideration. Parliament is expected to consider this bill before the end of the year. Ladies and gentlemen, our work in cybersecurity at the national level has won the admiration and praise of the international community.
“The Council of Europe has recognized Ghana as the hub for cybercrime capacity building in the English-speaking ECOWAS region. The World Bank has praised Ghana’s formative advances in cybersecurity and provided support to consolidate our modest achievements. The World Economic Forum has identified Ghana for the public-private sector partnership on cybersecurity. “
The National Cyber Security Awareness Month program is part of national efforts to build capacity and raise awareness about cybercrime; and the need to improve Ghanaian cybersecurity readiness among children, the general public, Ghanaian businesses and government agencies.
The theme for this year’s National Cybersecurity Awareness Month is “Cybersecurity in the Age of COVID-19.”
