Former President Jerry John Rawlings has called on the Election Commission (EC) to uphold the sanctity and integrity of the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.

That, he said, could be done by cleaning up the registry after recent reports of missing names and other challenges during the show.

An official statement from the Office of the Past President and signed by the Chief of the Communications Directorate, Kobina Andoh Amoakwa, said that Mr. Rawlings made the appeal during a meeting with the Heads of the Anlo Traditional Area in Accra.

The delegation of chiefs led by the Awadada of the state of Anlo, Togbe Agbesi Awusu II, had come to mourn the passing of Mrs. Victoria Agbotui, mother of the former president and queen mother of the state of Anlo.

Former President Rawlings said he raised those remarks in a recent meeting with the Homeland Security Minister after “the latter asked him if he had any concerns about current national issues.

He said that despite the government’s good intentions to protect the territorial interest and integrity of the country, the recent deployment of the army and other security services that caused some discontent could have been done without the passion it generated.

Former President Rawlings thanked Anlo state chiefs and elders for their support and wise advice in bringing his mother home and receiving final funeral rights.

He reiterated the need for such a remarkable step, declaring: “My grandmother and some uncles would have been buried in Keta, but lack of land or erosion caused by the sea has claimed many family homes and cemeteries.

He said he was grateful that the construction of a defense wall against the sea had re-nourished the coastline and provided some form of control to prevent the sea from doing the usual damage of land erosion.

Former President Rawlings noted that it was equally his prayer that the government would reclaim more land stretching to Aflao so that people living along that stretch have access to more land for socio-economic development.

He said that the essence of sending the mortal remains of the earth’s elders back home was to deepen the values ​​and spirituality of the traditional area and called for the protection of such cultural values.

Togbe Agbesi Awusu II, for his part, said: “The indisputable integrity of former President Rawlings, his contributions to national development and the dividends of his exceptional leadership is what we enjoy today as the Fourth Republic.”
