The Greater Accra Regional Office of the Ghana Red Cross has distributed food to 150 vulnerable households in Ashaiman Municipality as part of efforts to mitigate the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The distribution, aimed at people in the Zongo Laka neighborhood of Ashaiman, was sponsored by the Kuwait Red Crescent and focused on the vulnerable in Muslim communities.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the sidelines of the program, the Regional Director of the Ghana Red Cross in Greater Accra, Madame Catherine Adasu, said the gesture was necessary because the COVID-19 pandemic had brought hardships to the vulnerable.

Ms. Adasu reported that with the help of the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, “We identified Zongo Laka as one of the areas to be supported. We are giving them rice, oil, mats, soap, canned tomatoes, canned fish, etc. to support them ”.

“Many of the women you see here are old, some have lost their jobs, some cannot trade and others are equally unemployed, and with the closure of COVID-19 and many things that went wrong, the impact on families has been enormous. , ”Madame Adasu said.

He said this was the third time that the Ghana Red Cross had embarked on such a nationwide exercise that had helped alleviate the suffering of many families.

Madame Adasu called on organizations to partner with them to help the vulnerable, adding that “we know where they are; we know where they live, so let’s help them make sure the impact of COVID-19 on their home is minimized. “

The Ghana Red Cross Headquarters Disaster Manager, Mr. Jonathan Hope, reported that in order to determine who was qualified to receive assistance, they carried out a vulnerability capacity assessment with the help of the Imam of Zongo Laka, who knew the people in the community, and then did a validation to see if the selected people met the criteria.

Hope said that during the closure, the Ghana Red Cross, in collaboration with Nestlé Ghana Limited, supported 50,000 households with Nestlé products and hoped to reach more people with the help of corporate organizations.

In this particular exercise, the Red Cross distributed food to 150 families with 960 household members and buckets of veronica to some of the local mosques.
