The former Blues winger praised the impact Thiago Silva is making at Stamford Bridge and would like to see more steel added in the engine room.

Thomas Partey would be a “fantastic signing” for Chelsea, says Joe Cole, and Frank Lampard is urged to join Arsenal in the race for the Atlético de Madrid midfielder.

The Gunners have been closely associated with the Ghana international for much of the summer transfer window.

Mikel Arteta is considered to need a player to play the role of Patrick Vieira at the Emirates Stadium.

Chelsea already have options capable of filling a similar position at Stamford Bridge, with N’Golo Kante as the World Cup-winning midfielder.

Jorginho has also been used as a shield for the four behind, but the West London team is said to be exploring alternatives.

A big money move has been proposed for West Ham star Declan Rice, as the 21-year-old spent time in the Blues academy system when he was young.

Cole, however, believes that Partey should be another target in Lampard’s sights.

Chelsea have found considerable value in securing Thiago Silva’s experience, with the Brazilian defender beginning to find his feet in English football, and another seasoned player could easily fit into the fold.

Former Blues winger Cole said BT sport on looking at a big spending window from the Premier League giants and the promise of more to come: “I think Thiago Silva is a fantastic signing.

“One thing we talked about with Chelsea last season was the quality of the youngsters. But there were times when there was a bit of naivety in the back four.

“When you look around Europe, there is no better veteran midfielder who can come in and not just act, but help the players around him on and off the field by setting the tone for what it means to win.

“Any young coach who comes in wants to classify his goalkeeper and his four defenders. Last season, Frank didn’t have the luxury of doing that.

“So as soon as possible, Frank will want to finalize the goalkeeper position and the four behind. Then he will want to play with that midfield, and Partey would be a fantastic signing.

Silva, along with new No.1 Edouard Mendy, helped Chelsea keep a clean sheet in their last outing, with Crystal Palace sweeping 4-0 with minimal fuss.
