The spiritual key to human brotherhood

As Pope Francis signs his new encyclical human fraternity and solidarity, All brothers, echoes the words of previous popes, such as Pope Benedict XVI.

Pope Benedict XVI stated in his encyclical Charity in truth your belief that the reason itself failed to establish human brotherhood.

Underdevelopment has an even more important cause than the lack of deep thought: it is “the lack of brotherhood between individuals and peoples.” Will it ever be possible to obtain this brotherhood with human effort alone?? As society becomes increasingly globalized, makes us neighbors but does not make us brothers. Reason, by itself, is capable of capturing equality among men and of giving stability to their civic coexistence, but can’t establish brotherhood.

The key for Pope Benedict was in the divine source of brotherhood.

This originates from a transcendent vocation of God the Father, who loved us first, teaching us through the Son what fraternal charity is. Paul VI, presenting the different levels in the process of human development, placed at the top, after mentioning faith, “unity in the charity of Christ who calls us all to participate as children in the life of the living God, Father of all ”.

Jesus is the key to fraternity, loving each other in an authentic way.

This urgency is also a consequence of charity in truth. It is the charity of Christ that drives us: “Caritas Christi urget nos” (2 Cor 5, 14). Urgency is inscribed not only in things, it is not derived only from the rapid succession of events and problems, but also from the very issue at stake: the establishment of a true fraternity.

Pope Benedict very much wishes that a lasting brotherhood be established among all people, but he believed that God should be our driving force.
