When the Chinese man, Sun Qiang, was appointed Nkosuohene (Head of Development) from Asenyanso village in the Kwahu Afram Plains area of eastern Ghana, the mood for rejection was instant and spontaneous.

Many of those who were enraged by the decision ranged from indigenous to diaspora, who thought there were too many people in Ghana who qualified to be Nkosuohene for a Chinese to receive that honor.

The kingmakers were also enraged. They held a press conference to reject the installation and ordered its cancellation.

They said that on September 5, 2020, they received news of the arrest of a Chinese investor in Aframso, a village in the Afraim plains, as head of development in which they summoned the area’s Odikro for questioning as he was abhorrent to culture. and the Kwahu tradition of carrying anyone to shoulder height without permission from the palace.

They said that after the subpoena, Akyemfour Nana Asiedu, Abetifihene and their elders overturned the subpoena as established procedures were not followed.

Qiang also held a press conference to denounce Nkosuohene’s title after the outburst of anger.

Nkosuohene, which literally translates to head of development, is a very important component of Ghana’s traditional governance systems.

The Nkosuohene is responsible for the development of the community of their reign. It was created to honor someone who does not have to be a member of a royal family.

Created by the Ashanti, a small number of selected foreigners have been honored with this title that appreciates the contribution of non-royalty.

There are reasons why people’s anger doesn’t go away in this matter.

There is evidence that many Chinese citizens visit Ghana in the hope of gaining some of its resources; that is to say. Gold, wood, diamond, etc.

His government is even looking hard at the country’s bauxite as they seek to build much-needed roads for Ghana in exchange for a significant portion of the bauxite deposits in the Eastern Region.

So the Chinese appetite for Ghana’s resources, acquired by fair or dirty means, has become firmly established.

It is for this reason that it becomes difficult to ignore rumors in the Afram Plains community that Odikro has received funding from Mr. Qiang and allowed him to cut down trees for export.

At a press conference to announce his claim as Nkosuohene, the Chinese man’s spokesman, Baba Issah, condemned the negative reactions from the general public towards Qiang’s arrest.

However, he noted that despite his complaint, Qiang will remain committed to the development of the area.

“He is grateful to all of you for the opportunity. Yet today, what he is telling Ghanaians and the world is that he is no longer interested in the title of chieftain. He came in search of development and, therefore, he is disassociating himself from the title.

“The development of Afram Agya is a priority for him and therefore he still remains focused on the development of the area.

“Therefore, he is calling on all those interested in agriculture to come to the area and do so in order to create employment for the youth and people of the area,” Baba Issah said.

The Chinese, who operates an ethanol factory in the area, also extended an invitation to businessmen and farmers interested in growing cassava to come to the area and cultivate cassava farms that will supply the factory so that it can reach the goal of 700 jobs set. for the factory.
