The government has firmly ensured that the country’s digital ecosystem is safe for business growth despite the rise in reported cases of cybercrime.

The guarantee comes in the wake of an increase in the number of fraud cases which, according to the National Cyber Security Center, is roughly 11,000 so far.

In an interview with Joy Business after launching this year’s Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Vice Minister of Communications Alex Abban revealed that the government has taken all necessary steps to ensure that businesses are protected online.

Speaking on behalf of the minister, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the deputy minister noted that the increase in internet use in recent times during the coronavirus pandemic has further increased the threat of cybercrime.

“I think by now we have made sure that using the Internet has become an integral part of our daily lives, even more so for young people. ITU and UNESCO research in the 2019 report presented by the Broadband Commission for the Sustainable Development Goals, indicates that more than 50 percent of the world’s population is now online, while children make up more than 30 percent of Internet users. “

“By 2022, another 1.2 billion new users would have been added to this number, with children being the fastest growing online demographic.”

“Obviously, the continued dependence on the Internet by people and nations around the world has become noticeable over time. 2020 and the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic have further demonstrated the increasing dependence of governments, private sectors and individuals on technology. “

The earlier opening of Awareness Month was also used to launch the Child Protection Online portal.

For his part, the National Cyber Security Advisor, Dr. Albert Antwi-Boasiako, has indicated the country’s willingness to improve the security of companies and citizenship online by reviewing policies to adjust to the new normal.
