Former President John Dramani Mahama has expressed concern about the PNP government’s response to the Western Togland secessionist group.
The NDC flag bearer says the response from President Akufo-Addo and his government in this regard has been poor.
“It is clear that this president has not taken this matter seriously. I mean the whole government, the security services, it’s as if they have a very indifferent attitude towards western Togo, ”he said.
This comes after the president urged citizens to remain calm while law enforcement agencies grapple with the matter.
“Have begun [acting] already and we have seen results. If I panic, the country panics and that is not the purpose of the leadership, ”added the president.
Mahama, however, says this is not the kind of response the country needs to address the issue.
“Our Constitution makes it clear that we must protect the territorial integrity of Ghana; it is one of the most serious things the Constitution is about. And that’s why when he was president, he didn’t sleep on this maritime boundary issue, “he said.
The state is still grappling with a group allegedly members of the Western Togo Restoration Front fighting for the independence of some parts of the Volta region.
The recent attack was launched in the Ho STC yard where they burned two of the 11 buses parked in the yard.
31 people were detained by the security apparatus last Friday after the group allegedly launched a simultaneous attack on 2 police stations in Aveyime and Mepe.
Despite these efforts, the former president believes that the current government must do more.
“I think the president should sit down and make sure the national security apparatus is working properly and choose intelligence and act before those people do anything else,” he added.
