The government will build a football stadium in memory of the seven young footballers who lost their lives after the minibus they were traveling in crashed into the Offin River last month.

In a speech at the funeral of four of the seven today in Offinso, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Isaac Kwame Asiamah said that the stadium proposed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is to immortalize young people and serve as a constant reminder that the incident will never be repeated.

The minister said he was confident that the installation, when completed, will serve as a boost for youth soccer in Offinso after the devastating blow of losing such talented soccer players in the car accident on Saturday 19 September 2020.

“God knows what is best, although we cannot understand what happened. What we can do is use it as a teaching moment in our history and learn lessons from it,” Asiamah said.

“What the boys wanted was to become world-class footballers, so what can we do to honor their lives? The president wants them to be remembered forever. We can use this unfortunate incident to enhance the development of football in Offinso.”

“The president says that I must inform you that the government will build an ultra-modern stadium in Offinso. The stadium will also have a memorial with the images of the seven players. Its mark of excellence will be celebrated forever and ever.”

Funeral

The seven children, namely Ofori Amanfo Ramsey, Alex Agyemang, Antwi Richmond, Abdulai Jamal, Hubert Anaba, Boakye Samuel and Kwame Opoku were returning from a child screening exercise at a registration center in Afrancho, near Kumasi, in the Ashanti region. when they were involved in the accident. They were between 12 and 15 years old.

The bodies of Anaaba, Jamal, Opoku and Agyemang were laid in state at yesterday’s grim funeral ceremony with their coffins propped up on folding chairs and covered with GFA flags.

Dozens of mourners also attended, including their families, the director general of the National Sports Authority, Professor Peter Twumasi, and a delegation from the GFA led by his vice-president Mark Addo.
