A group called the Coalition of Injured Teachers has demonstrated in Accra against the government over unpaid salaries and delayed promotions.
Made up of various educators from around the country, the group claims that its members have not been paid for services provided since 2012.
According to Coalition Coordinator Richard Oppong, documents that serve as evidence of his feelings have been presented to the Teachers’ Unions: the National Association of Teachers of Ghana (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT): on several occasions, however, they have not obtained substantial results.
“These people will take the documents and only repeatedly tell us that they will work on them, but nothing is ever done. If given the opportunity, I would suggest that all the Teachers Unions dissolve and that each teacher be free and devoid of all the Unions, because they are not working in our favor, “he said.
Exemplifying the intensity of his ordeal, Mr. Oppong recounted to Joy News how his union asked him to pay the cost of transportation to submit his petition and photocopies of his pay stubs to the Ghana Education Service (GES) before action is taken.
The Coalition, which earlier this month had challenged the government to release the names of the people it claims to have paid the legacy arrears, also says its 11,000 members would picket the office of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, if the government does not meet its obligations. demands.
The group’s public relations officer, Francis Tano, questioned the Ghana Education Service (GES) about the validity of a list that he said was presented to them on Monday with the names of more than 11,000 teachers who have not received their payment.
“We have been asked to bring our documents to the district office, in a digital age. If we have been paid, where does the list come from? I ask.
“We want to tell you that we have been trying to do this all this time, and now we are tired of working with paper documents. And that’s why we are demonstrating ”.
The group of enraged protesters marches towards the offices of GES and the Ministry of Education.
