Members of the Chamber of Chiefs of the Volta RegionMembers of the Chamber of Chiefs of the Volta Region

The House of Chiefs of the Volta Region has called for research on the development of western Togoland.

According to the bosses, although recent events have caused unrest among the people of the region, they do not support the group’s agenda to divide the country.

“The Chamber of Chiefs of the Volta Region roundly condemns these acts of the so-called“ West Togoland Group ”in no uncertain terms. These are criminal actions, which must be investigated and those involved must face all the rigors of the law.

“The Chamber of Chiefs of the Volta Region wishes to clearly express their commitment to a peaceful and united Ghana, and their readiness to work with the government to ensure peace and stability in the Volta Region and the country as a whole,” they said the bosses in a statement. .

However, they wondered how the group managed to raise a flag of their so-called western Togo in the office of the Volta regional minister.

Below are the details of the statement.

PRESS STATEMENT OF THE HOUSE OF CHIEFS OF THE VOLTA REGION FOLLOWING AN EMERGENCY MEETING HELD ON SEPTEMBER 27, 2020

The Standing Committee of the House of Chiefs of the Volta Region held an emergency meeting on Sunday, September 27, 2020 to discuss the rebel actions, allegedly carried out by a secessionist group called “West West Togo Group”, in various places of the Volta Region in the early morning of Friday, September 25, 2020.

The Minister of Religious Affairs and Heads of State, Mr. Kofi Dzamesi, and the Minister of National Security, Mr. Albert Kan-Dapaah, were invited to attend this important meeting, but were unable to attend. While the Minister of National Security indicated that he was already in Kumasi to prepare for the president’s tour of the Ashanti region, the Minister of Headquarters and Religious Affairs said that he had previously scheduled other appointments for the day and therefore could not assist.

The meeting discussed activities allegedly carried out by the “West Togoland Group”, including:

1. The mounting of barricades and the burning of truck tires on some roads in various parts of the region, which prevented the free movement of vehicles;

2. The attack on the Mepe Police Station, where the group allegedly broke into the Police cell, freed some suspects and locked up the Police on duty. It was also reported that they broke into the armory and took some weapons;

3. The shots and wounds of the Commander of the Divisional Police, who was rushed to the hospital to receive treatment; Y,

4.The seizure of police vans, amid the firing of firearms.

The Chamber of Chiefs of the Volta Region roundly condemns these acts of the so-called “West Togoland Group” in no uncertain terms. These were criminal actions, which had to be investigated and those involved face the rigors of the law.

The Chamber of Chiefs of the Volta Region would like to clearly state its commitment to a peaceful and united Ghana, and its willingness to work with the government to ensure peace and stability in the Volta Region and the country as a whole.

In this regard, we want to highlight issues and issues of concern and relevance in relation to these alleged rebel actions, the resolution of which are important for our collective work for the strengthening of our peace:

1.How the group managed to mount their billboards and flags without anyone noticing until these billboards were only seen in the morning, in all past cases. The Committee wondered how the culprits were able to move huge billboards to different locations, through the various police checkpoints without the police being aware of it.

2. More intriguing was the ability of the culprits to raise a “West Togoland Group” flag at the Volta Region Coordination Council, the Regional Minister’s office, which also went unnoticed for night security.

The reassuring, but also intriguing news on GhanaWeb on September 26, 2020, in which it was reported that the Volta Regional Minister swore that the recent activity was the last time the secessionist group would behave in such a way, and that he had been aware of their activities.

4. The identity of the detainees after the events of Friday, September 25. It was alleged that innocent bystanders who were watching what was happening were arrested. It was also reported that some Dzemeni traders, who came to one of the illegal roadblocks, were detained.

5. The identity of two (2) people who were shot and killed in Juapong and three (3) others in Battor. One of those shot dead in Juapong was reported to be a known nearby coconut vendor.

6. The omission of the Regional Councilor, who is the head of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), to call or inform any of our Chiefs on the matter.

7. The inability of National Security to collect intelligence information on these activities to prevent them or stop the conspirators, allowing these despicable acts to be committed.

However, having said all of the above, we consider it our responsibility to the people of the Volta Region and the entire nation to point out some of the incidents and behaviors that have been a source of concern and frustration for the people of the Region. :

1.The statement, a few years ago, of the Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, deputy from Assin Central, urging the massacre of the Voltarians and Gas;

2 KT Hammond’s recent videotaped statement that the people of the Volta region are not Ghanaian, but Togolese;

3. The recent and “wrong” exclusion of the Region’s highways from the national budget; Y,

4. Lack of respect for the Chiefs during the visits of political leaders to the region.

5. The video circulated by a certain Kevin Taylor, allegedly based in the United States of America, in which he alleged that the government planned to send vigilantes to foment unrest in the Region, before the elections, with a view to interrupting them.

We cannot pretend not to know that these types of statements and behaviors can have consequences. The gathering reminds all Ghanaians that we have no choice but to live together, in peace, in our God-given land. Therefore, we must all conduct ourselves in a way that promotes our peace, unity and development.

The people of the Volta region are known to love peace, and we want to assure all Ghanaians that the people of the region will not support criminal conduct, such as those committed on Friday, September 25, 2020.

The Chamber of Chiefs of the Volta Region therefore calls on the government to carry out an independent and transparent investigation into the events of Friday, September 25, 2020 and bring the perpetrators to the reserve, in order to ensure a peaceful environment for the free and fair conduct of the upcoming general elections, particularly in the Volta Region.

The House of Chiefs of the Volta Region finally wishes to call on the people of the Region to remain calm and help maintain the peace that the region has enjoyed over the years.

Signed:

TOBGE TEPRE HODO IV (Vice President) Volta Chamber of Regional Chiefs
