As the political atmosphere heats up across the country, one of the constituencies to watch out for in the Savannah region is the Yapei-Kusawgu constituency.

The constituency is a traditional constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), but the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is optimistic about capturing the power of the NDC.

Yapei-Kusawgu constituency is one of seven constituencies in the Savannah region.

It is the most populous electoral district in the region with 62,313 registered voters in the recent ballot.

Created in 1992, the constituency shares boundaries with the Kintampo North and Damongo constituencies.

It is known as the industrial center of the Savannah belt as it is home to the Savanna Diamond cement, the shea butter processing factory and the BOST warehouse in Buipe.

It also has the Black Volta flowing through the community.

Since its inception in 1992, the Constituency has only produced two Members of Parliament (MP) and the NDC has always won the seat.

Alhaji Amadu Seidu is the first and longest MP to annex the seat in 1992.

He retained it for the NDC in 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012.

But in 2016, the six-term deputy resigned from the race, which gave way to the participation of former Deputy Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor after winning the primaries.

In the 2016 elections, Jinapor obtained 23,364 votes, representing 62.13 percent, while his opponent, Zakaria Yakubu, obtained 14,243, representing 37.87 percent.

For the presidential election, NDC’s John Dramani Mahama won 24,008 representing 64.49 percent to beat President Akufo-Addo, who got 12,782 votes representing 34.40 percent.

With less than 70 days to go until the elections, the two main political parties have expressed their willingness to win the seat.

Abu Kamara of the PNP says the days of incumbent deputy John Abdulai Jinapor are numbered.

He is optimistic about making history by annexing the PNP headquarters.

“The days of the incumbent deputy and the NDC are numbered in the electoral district with their instinctive activities.”

But the incumbent’s campaign manager, Mahama Fuseini, believes the NPP will never be able to win in the Yapei-Kusawgu constituency.

“We will continue to win the position thanks to our good works.”

As the clock ticks to December 7, voters will decide who represents them in the constituency.
