Navrongo’s Reference Laboratory in the Upper East region will soon be added to centers conducting tests for complex infectious diseases such as coronavirus and cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) in the country.

This, according to the Deputy Minister of Health, Dr. Bernard Okoe-Boye, is part of the measures to obtain more testing centers in the country to ease the pressure on the Noguchi Memorial Medical Research Institute and the Kumasi Center for Collaborative Research (KCCR ).

The two have been the main laboratories for analysis of coronavirus samples throughout the country since the outbreak of the pandemic in the country.

Addressing parliament, Dr. Okoe-Boye stated that “I am pleased to say that, apart from the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research in Accra and KCCR in Kumasi, the Akufo-Addo government has worked hard to ensure that in these few weeks, Korle- The Public Health Reference Laboratory and the UHAS Laboratory in the Volta Region have been added to the centers to perform the COVID-19 tests. Soon, Navrongo Reference Laboratory and other facilities will be equipped to enhance our diagnostic capabilities. for CSM, COVID-19 and other diseases compared to modern and sophisticated laboratories capable of performing polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests. “

This announcement comes after several calls from the Upper East Regional Health Directorate for a coronavirus testing center at the Navrongo Research Center in Kassena-Nankana Municipality.

The Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Winfred Ofosu, previously stated that “there will be another center in Tamale for us, but we are also pressing the Ministry of Health and the COVID-19 presidential committee to establish a testing center in the center of Navrongo investigation. ” because we have the relevant team. “

He explained that the government had asked the Kumasi Center for Collaborative Research (KCCR) to send engineers “to come and configure it, and if that is done, in the next two weeks, we will not have to suffer to send samples and obtain results on time within 24 hours. “

The Laboratory of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Ho began testing samples of COVID-19 after a similar update earlier this week.
