Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Ernest Addison told reporters the Deputy Air Marshal is supporting the central bank to use helicopters to transport cash to banks across the country.

He explained that this follows recent criminal attacks on bullion trucks in the country.

Responding to a question about the measures the central bank has put in place to deal with the recent attacks on bullion vans, while speaking at the Monetary Policy Committee press conference in Accra on Monday, September 28, Dr. Addison said that the Government Bank has taken note of the attacks and actions have been taken to deal with the threat accordingly.

There was recently an attack on a bullion truck in Kumasi, in the Ashanti region.

Dr. Addison said: “This is about the third time that we have that type of incidence. They all use these Nissan pickups that have been turned into bullion vans.

“It is an issue that the Bank of Ghana has taken seriously. I think last week, Securities met with the banks to decide the way forward.

“We have a pretty good fleet of bullion vans and we ask you to see how we collaborate with the banks so that we have a safer way to transport money across the country.

“I have also met with Air Vice Marshall and he has offered to help the bank withdraw money across the country using some of the planes they have. So a lot of work is being done to improve the transportation of foreign currency across the country. ”

Dr. Addison also announced that the Monetary Policy Committee has kept the monetary policy rate at 14.5 percent.

He said after the 96th MPC meeting on Monday, September 28. Dr. Addison added that growth in 2020 is estimated to be between 2 and 25 percent.

“Consumer confidence is rebounding strongly, consumers appear to be responding to the gradual lifting of restrictions.”

In addition, he stated that around 95 companies surveyed are showing strong optimism despite the ravages of the coronavirus.
