The Member of Parliament of the North Tongu constituency, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has revealed that some separatists from western Togo who sought the support of the overlord of the Dagbon Kindom Yaa-Naa Abubakari Mahama II were dismissed from the Gbewaa Palace.

Speaking in an interview with Okay Fm’s Kwame Nkrumah Tikese monitored by GhanaWeb, the MP said that because of Yaa Naa’s swift intervention, the secessionists would have ended up getting more support for their agenda.

“Do you know that a delegation from this group had gone to Dagbon earlier to confer with the Yaa Naa? Our luck is that Yaa Naa quickly expelled them from Dagbon and National Security knows it. “

According to the MP, the purpose of the separatists’ visit was to involve the Yaa Naa to gain their support and that of the Dagbon people in demanding the independence of western Togo, which became part of Ghana after a plebiscite on 9 may. 1956.

“They have the original map of western Togoland and they know that Dagbon used to be part of it. So they went there to request support. They went there demanding that the Yaa Naa team up with them to fight the battle and are consulting with other chiefs. I know of other arrests that have been made in other regions, ”he revealed.

The Volta region, on Friday, September 25, 2020, was thrown into a state of chaos when members of a secessionist group, seeking independence from the area to become western Togo, staged spontaneous attacks in various parts of the region. .

The attacks included blocking the main points of entry into the region, as well as attacks on the Aveyime and Mepe police stations, all in the North Tongu district.

However, according to Mr. Okudzeto, even though the secession campaign has been largely led by people supposedly from the Volta region, most of what is the Volta region today was not part of western Togo .

“If you look at the history of this situation in western Togo up to the plebiscite of May 9, 1966, you will realize from the map of western Togo that while people are making this a Volta region thing, a great part of the Volta region was not part of the West Togo fight. All three Tongu constituencies, including North Tongu, my area, were not part and the Anlo area was not part. When you look at the territories, they were just parts of the current Oti, Kpando, Hohoe and Ho Region. That’s right, so for the lager part of the Volta region we have never been part of this whole western Togo business, ”said the deputy.

He warned that “if our leaders do not take this threat seriously and use superior intelligence gathering to counter and nip this in the bud, this has the potential to destabilize not just parts of the Volta region but the entire country.”
