The former Barcelona star has started working with his new club and his coach was impressed with what he saw
Diego Simeone was more impressed by the assist and movement off the ball by Luis Suárez than by his two goals in Atlético de Madrid’s 6-1 win against Granada.
Suarez came in in the 70th minute and marked his Atleti debut in style by scoring an impressive double and setting up fellow substitute Marcos Llorente on Sunday.
The Uruguayan international, who only joined on Friday in a 6 million euro deal from Barcelona, also won a penalty that was annulled by the VAR in a unilateral league match.
Suárez scored with two types of spikes, one with a brilliant header and the other with a nice spike for the first time on the rebound, but head coach Simeone was very pleased with the way his new striker put Llorente ahead with just his second touch of the ball.
“I did not highlight his two goals, but his assists, his runs and his movement,” Simeone said after the game.
“The changes gave us an extra with the strength of Marcos, the quality of Vitolo, the clarity of Thomas [Partey] and Suárez knows what he has to do: play for the team. “
Diego Costa, Ángel Correa and Joao Félix also scored Atlético’s goal at the Wanda Metropolitano, as they recorded their biggest win in a league opener with Simeone.
Atleti has been inclined to rival Real Madrid and Barça for the title this season and Simeone is hopeful that more competition for a starting position can get the most out of his players.
“It will depend on our work, the depth of our squad and the safety of the players. The team was released,” he said.
“The arrival of an important player improves the team, but the team was already doing very well. Now we will continue to take it game by game, as always.
“The arrival of Suárez generates a very good internal competition and if the 23 players accept the minutes they are going to get, we will surely compete well.”
“From my perspective, when it comes to building a team, I look for guys who know how to perform and who accept when they play and when they don’t.
“This is how great teams are formed. That is what gives you the possibility of having more options. That is what we are looking for season after season.”
