Frank Lampard is confident that Thiago Silva will quickly improve his command of English and has backed the Brazilian to overcome his mistake on his Premier League debut.
Silva made a horrible mistake on West Brom’s second goal when Chelsea lost points with a 3-3 draw at The Hawthorns on Saturday.
The veteran center-back, signed for free by Paris Saint-German this summer, does not speak English, but Lampard is sure his limited understanding of the language will improve.
Silva is taking English lessons five days a week and Lampard said: “It is something we have worked on because it is what it is, we have not had time.
“Thiago shows up here pretty cool and he’s in and around us, I’m sure he’ll learn that quickly.
“I’m not sure how relative it was on Saturday, but he doesn’t speak the language very well.
“Some players on the squad speak languages he speaks, French being the main one, but here we have guys who speak Portuguese and Italian.
“If language is a small barrier, we need time to work. That is what we have in front of us.”
Despite his communication problems, Lampard believes Silva can still be a Chelsea leader at the rear.
“Of course it is,” added the Chelsea manager. And he proved it on Saturday.
“People are going to want to talk about the goal and that is fair play, that is the nature of being the best footballer that he has been throughout his career.
“Other than that, we saw his leadership and his qualities and we’re going to see more of that.”
