Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has mocked former President John Mahama and the promise in the manifesto of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to facilitate the establishment of morgues in accordance with Islamic customs and practices.
He said the Akufo-Addo government since taking office has contributed greatly to improving the lives of people in the Zongo communities.
Speaking at the national council of Fulani chiefs conference, Dr. Bawumia says that people in the Zongo communities deserve education and not funeral homes.
“We are going to build a model high school in the Zongo community in each region, so we will start with 16 model SHS so that our children have the opportunity to attend those schools. That will be the beginning of next year. Our policy is not a Zongo, a morgue, we are not thinking of a morgue. We are thinking about schools, we want to develop our Zongos with schools and not with morgue “.
The NDC stated in its 2020 manifesto that it will build the morgues in accordance with Islamic customs and practices and will collaborate with the Ministry of Health to establish focal teams responsible for procedures that comply with Islamic customs in all state morgues.
But the announcement has met with varied positions within the political discourse.
According to the NDC, his promise to facilitate the establishment of morgues in the Zongo communities was a demand from residents during the party’s consultation prior to compiling his manifesto.
The party says key Islamic leaders and academics have already endorsed the need for separate morgues for their people.
