The Aveyime and Mepe police stations in the North Tongu district of the Volta region were invaded at dawn on Friday 25 September by some armed members of an alleged secessionist group.

The group reportedly seized both police stations simultaneously, overpowered the police officers on duty, broke into the police arsenal and took all the weapons belonging to the police.

“They stripped the police officers on duty, took their weapons and locked them in their cells before breaking into the armory,” an eyewitness testified.

In a widely circulated video available on GhanaWeb, criminals were seen, after attacking police stations, leading a police patrol.

The vehicle was completely occupied by thugs with guns, singing songs of war and jubilation.

“We are free … we are free forever,” the group said in the video.

The group subsequently raised the western Togo flag and joined their colleagues at the Aveyime police station in the police vehicle and injured an officer.

The group is said to be about 50.

There have been accusations and counter-accusations about who these people are and why the intelligence agencies were unable to predict the incident. It is controversially speculated that national security agents orchestrated the events, then sent heavily armed security officers to the Volta region to intimidate voters. Secessionist groups have denied their involvement in these attacks. Analysts have said that prosecuting the detainees is the only way to resolve the dispute.
