Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer defended Paul Pogba after his miserable start to the season continued in Brighton.

Pogba failed to make an impact on the game as Brighton dominated the proceedings on the south coast.

The Red Devils emerged with a serendipitous 3-2 victory courtesy of the late drama when Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty on the last gasp.

Solskjaer admitted that his team had “gotten away with it” at Amex Stadium, but insisted they will improve.

And he excused Pogba, who was substituted in the second half, for his poor performance after an interrupted preseason.

“He missed a lot of preseason because of his illness,” Solskjaer said.

Paul Pogba had a miserable afternoon against Brighton

“He has not had any international or friendly matches against Villa.

“The two 65 minutes he has had will help him and he will get better and better.”

Despite Pogba’s poor performances against Brighton and Crystal Palace, it is United’s defense that has come into the limelight.

However, Solskjaer insists he is well supplied and unlikely to bring new faces in his last four before the October 5 transfer deadline.

“We have a lot of defenders here and I put in Eric (Bailly) to reinforce the defense, following the runs of (Leandro) Trossard and (Neal) Maupay,” Solskjaer said.

“So for me, we have enough good centrals here at the moment.

“When you concede opportunities and you concede goals, there are two different things that you can see: it is the form of the team or there are individual errors.

“For me, we are not in our best form, our form is not there, we are not sharp enough to stop crosses or continue the races.

“We are a little behind and they are structural errors than individual errors. I think Victor did well today.”
