Lobbyist Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA) has said that even though the Election Commission has, so far, done well in compiling a new voter list, it should “sit down” and make sure all Anomalies discovered through the voter list display exercise are rectified to safeguard the sanctity of the upcoming elections on December 7, 2020.
In a press release issued on Friday, September 25, 2020 and signed by John Hall Acquaah, LMVCA’s Chief Operating Officer, the group said: “The Ghana Election Commission (EC) should therefore, as a matter of urgency, rectify all the anomalies that have been discovered in the exhibition exercise to ensure that no registered voter is deprived of the constitutional right to vote on election day ”.
“The LMVCA has a critical interest in the sanctity of the electoral process and the overall outcome of the elections in Ghana.
“It is in this note that we urge the EC to urgently feel open and transparent to all interested parties to ensure that the transparency and integrity of the electoral process are fully respected at its highest point, and deliver credible elections whose results cannot be disputed, “says the statement, which follows in its entirety.
EXERCISE OF VOTER REGISTRATION EXHIBITION
The Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA) has noted with great concern reports of varying degrees of irregularities in the ongoing voter registration exercise.
The LMVCA, as a group of election observers, has consistently emphasized the positive correlation between a credible voter registration and credible elections.
The Ghana Election Commission (EC) should therefore urgently rectify all anomalies that have been discovered in the screening exercise to ensure that no registered voter is deprived of the constitutional right to vote on Election Day.
We take this opportunity to congratulate the EC on a successful voter registration exercise amid the fears and uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The EC remained focused and resolute in its determination to deliver, for the good people of Ghana, a credible electoral roll for the December 2020 elections and beyond.
The Commission put in place measures for the compilation of a new voter register in a secure environment and successfully registered a total of some 16,963,306 million Ghanaians.
Therefore, we believe that the EC deserves praise.
It should be noted that the testing of biometric voting devices (BVDs) in 15% of polling stations nationwide is a huge improvement over the 2016 screening exercise during which BVDs were not used during the screening of the voter registration.
The LMVCA recognizes the EC’s consultative move to extend the exhibition period by two days in response to calls from citizens, political parties, and civil society groups.
The additional days will certainly allow interested individuals to participate in the exercise outside of business days and hours.
We urge all registered voters to participate in the exhibition exercise to confirm that they will be able to vote on Election Day, December 7, 2020.
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, we encourage registered voters to take advantage of the widely publicized 1422 short code to verify their data as it was recorded in the voter registry, in order to minimize the number of people physically present in the different polling stations.
The LMVCA has a critical interest in the sanctity of the electoral process and the overall outcome of the elections in Ghana.
It is in this note that we urge the EC to urgently feel open and transparent to all stakeholders to ensure that the transparency and integrity of the electoral process is fully maintained at its highest point, and to offer credible elections whose results cannot be disputed.
We urge the Commission to institutionalize a weekly press conference spanning the next 12 clear weeks to regularly update stakeholders and citizens on the December 2020 elections.
This will promote continuous deliberation and debate on electoral issues to foster collaboration and openness between the EC and relevant stakeholders prior to the general elections.
The LMVCA remains steadfast in our commitment to credible elections.
Therefore, we are closely monitoring the electoral process and the activities of the Commission. We hope that, in the interest of consolidating our democracy, the Electoral Commission will listen and act quickly for the benefit of our democracy and the country in general.
Signed
