Frank Lampard wants Chelsea’s goalkeepers to learn by working with Petr Cech after they were given the opportunity to train with the club’s former number one.
The Chelsea manager has struggled to find the right goalkeeper and hopes that signing Édouard Mendy from Rennes for £ 22 million will bring out the best of Willy Caballero and Kepa Arrizabalaga, who could be eliminated for Saturday night’s trip to West Brom after fighting Brighton and Liverpool.
Lampard believes the competition created by Mendy’s arrival could improve Arrizabalaga’s form, but he has another trick up his sleeve. The 38-year-old Cech, who became Chelsea’s technical and performance advisor after retiring last year, has been giving advice to the goalkeeper as he works on his fitness in training camp.
“With Petr he had a lot to give on that side,” said Lampard, who did not rule out that Arrizabalaga was loaned out. “Obviously his daily job is to be a technical advisor and he has been a great help to me on that front. Having Petr training with the goalkeepers and bringing his experience is great. It still has great quality. I think he retired quite young.
“He is training and staying fit, which I think is healthy for him and for the goalkeepers on the squad. I think that’s how far it goes. I have absolutely no problem with that. It is something very positive for the goalkeepers and Petr enjoys doing it. Why not go back and give that experience to the goalkeepers? “
Cech was crucial in signing Mendy, who is not ready to start against West Brom. “There is no written rule about when he’s there at that time,” Lampard said of Cech. “It’s something that I like. We are a united family. That was one of the things when I came back to the club.
“It’s not that I’m going to put on my boots and participate every day, but we are trying to make sure the group is united. Petr has his job, but sometimes he also helps the goalkeepers. Why not take advantage of the best goalkeeper in the world, who was for a long time, to pass on that knowledge?
Paris Saint-Germain is interested in signing Antonio Rüdiger, who has been left out of Chelsea’s last two squads. Chelsea could insist on a permanent deal for the defender.
