The Security Council of the Volta Region has assured citizens that steps have been taken to restore peace and stability in the region.

This comes after members of the Western Togo Restoration Front attacked the Aveyime and Mepe police stations in the early hours of Friday.

The group reportedly took over both stations simultaneously; Dominate the police officers and raid the armory.

The group of about 50 supposedly made up of locals from Mepe, Aveyime, Battor and the surrounding communities, was later seen singing war songs and retiring from the success of their operations.

But the regional minister, Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, said in a statement that deployed security personnel have managed to control the situation.

“In this sense, the Region remains relatively peaceful. The safety and protection of all well-intentioned people in the region and of those who wish to come to the region is assured, ”he said.

Dr. Yao Letsa further urged the region’s chiefs, opinion leaders and residents to voluntarily provide information that will lead to the perpetrators of the illegal act.

“The City Council has the strongest conviction that 99.9% of the population of the Volta region does not support the activities of these groups and is very disappointed by the activities that are tarnishing the image of the region.”

Earlier today, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, condemned the invasion by armed men believed to be members of the West Togo secession group.

Describing the act as unprecedented, Mr. Ablakwa described the situation as “total impunity with law enforcement that seemed defenseless even when some of his counterparts became victims.”
