Luis Suárez was introduced as an Atlético de Madrid player on Friday, sparking outright fury from four Barcelona legends.
The Uruguayan forward was shown the door at the Camp Nou despite having a year left on his contract, and manager Ronald Koeman immediately told the former Liverpool player that he had no future at the club.
Suárez has signed a two-year contract in the Spanish capital after passing his medical exam on Friday, and is leaving after 198 goals in 283 appearances for the club.
Atlético have paid a negotiating fee of no more than 6 million euros for Suárez, who headed straight for training with his new club on Friday.
His departure has left Messi angry at the club just weeks after he reversed his own decision to leave.
The Argentine posted a long goodbye to Suárez on Instagram in which he wrote: “You deserved a farewell that fit who you are: one of the most important players in the club’s history.”
“Someone who achieved great things for the team and individually. You didn’t deserve to be fired like they did. But the truth is that nothing surprises me at this point.
Barça icons Samuel Eto’o, Neymar and Dani Alves were quick to comment on Messi’s post, with Eto’o, another former Barça No. 9 like Suárez, writing: “Son, you can’t BUY class. Take care and think about of you.”
Neymar, who formed a third of the deadly trio of strikes of the ‘MSN’ with Messi and Suárez, added: “The way they do things is incredible,” as he referred to the club’s board and the unpopular president Josep Maria Bartomeu .
And the former Barça right-back Alves wrote: “Unfortunately, this is the reality of a long time ago. It is only confirmed year after year!
“It’s not about winning or losing, we know, it’s about respect and they don’t know anything about it.”
