The managing director of the Ghana publishing house, David Asante, has asked the Election Commission to “sit down” and address voter registration concerns.
According to him, the commission should work to win the trust of Ghanaians as the 2020 elections approach.
It comes after the NDC opposition raised concerns about the names removed from the voter registry. The party says the ongoing voter registration display exercise must be extended for registration anomalies to be resolved.
Speaking on Starr FM’s Hotseat on Friday, Mr. Asante, who also acts as the coordinator of the Let My Vote Count Alliance lobby, the EC should resolve all concerns that have been raised by political parties about registration by urns.
“While I am sitting here, I agree with the requests that the EC must sit down, must work to gain the trust of the general population so that the results of the polls are acceptable to all,” said presenter Kwame Danso-Acheampong .
However, he criticized former President John Mahama’s call that the NDC will not accept the results of a flawed election.
“John Mahama’s call for foreign observers to arrive early in this country is unnecessary. We have been holding elections here without them. In this country, who determines what is a flawed election? The reasoning that its members have been removed from the registry is weak. “
NDC on the Volter registry
The opposition NDC has urged the Election Commission to ensure a credible and transparent election, adding that it will not accept the results of a flawed election.
The latest NDC warning comes after the party alleged that the EC was deliberately removing the names of its members from the newly compiled voter registry after omissions were identified at some polling stations across the country during the exhibition exercise. in progress.
The EC has denied the accusation and subsequently extended the duration of the exercise by two more days, until the end of September 27.
But party standard-bearer John Dramani Mahama warned the electoral management body that its credibility was at stake and it must implement measures to ensure that the next vote is fair to all concerned.
Although Mr. Mahama acknowledged that the NDC has shown restraint since the electoral process began, he stated that the party will not allow the EC to usurp the mandate of the people.
Addressing the nation on Thursday, September 24, Mr. Mahama noted that “we at the NDC have shown restraint at all times in this electoral process, even now we are committed to doing so. But we will not accept the result of a faulty election. “
He continued: “We certainly will not look at, nor will we shirk our civic responsibility and allow the EC, whether it intends or through sheer incompetence, to usurp the mandate of the peoples in the December 7 elections.”
“We want to see fairness, transparency and integrity in the pre-election process. The EC will assume responsibility and act in good faith to resolve them, ”he added.
