The latest survey by the National Highway Safety Authority (NRSA) reveals that 1,585 deaths were recorded at the end of August this year.
This is derived from a total of 9,205 road accidents that occurred in the country.
Speaking at a meeting with the Ghana Journalists Association about plans to reduce the massacre on the roads, NRSA CEO May Obiri Yeboah lamented the impact of road accidents on the economy.
“At the end of August 2020, 9,205 crashes involving 15,459 vehicles were reported and resulted in 1,585 deaths, 1,638 pedestrian strikes and 9,397 injuries. This situation represents a relative increase in the situation during the same period last year. With a 0.34% increase in the number of crashes, a 2.9% increase in the number of vehicles involved, a 0.13% increase in fatalities and a 1.2% increase in injury cases. However, there was a 17.61% reduction in the fall of pedestrians. ”
Ing Obiri Yeboah pointed out that “men are still the most vulnerable to traffic accident victims, as 81% of accident victims were men.”
He also called on political parties to adhere to road safety regulations in their activities leading up to the 2020 general elections.
“During the last two decades, data suggests an increase in traffic accidents during an election year, except in 2008 and 2016. With the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections underway, we wish to call on all leaders of political parties to review the road safety code for political parties, which requires political parties to appoint road safety officers. These officers have the responsibility of guaranteeing internal control and the implementation of the best practices of road safety protocols, for the good of the campaign ”.
“We also want to ask you to join us in advocating for good behavior in road safety,” he added.
