The National House of Chiefs has condemned the unrest in parts of Ghana’s Volta region.
Gunmen believed to be members of the separatist group attacked two police stations in eastern Ghana on Friday in an attempt to declare the territory independent.
Secessionists known as the Homeland Study Group Foundation managed to capture three members of the Ghana Police Service during the dawn attack and took some weapons.
The armed group also set up barricades amid shots that led to joint police and military action.
The president of the National House of Chiefs, Togbe Afede XIV, speaking about the development in a meeting with members of the House, stressed that the events in the Volta region are strange and alarming.
“These are things that I don’t remember having happened in our country; We are lucky that the Minister is with us, as he had already informed the members of the Standing Committee about these events that the Standing Committee found very, very alarming, ”he lamented.
He said the Standing Committee would issue its report on the fight to the House and the public.
“The Standing Committee would issue a report after its meeting on developments in the Volta region that we disapprove of,” he added.
Togbe Afede XIV called on Ghanaians and relevant government stakeholders to “make sure this doesn’t get worse. [so] that our country would remain a peaceful nation. “
