The suspension of the strike at a press conference in Accra
The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), starting at 08:00 on Thursday, September 24, will begin its full work pending the outcome of further negotiations.
Ms. Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, GRNMA National President, announced the suspension of the strike at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, following the Interlocutory Order of the National Labor Commission (NLC), which was officially notified to the Head of the Association. She, however, said: “For the avoidance of doubt, we wish to indicate that the strike action is simply suspended and that our brave registered nurses, midwives, medical assistants and registered anesthetists are to begin full work on Thursday, September 24, 2020 at 8:00 am with the morning shift. “
Ms. Ofori-Ampofo commended all members of the Association and their allies for the unity and massive support displayed during the period.
She said the leadership was called into a meeting Wednesday with the National Labor Commission (NLC) and promised that the leadership would not fail them, urging all members to keep faith in him.
Ms Ofori-Ampofo, however, said upon returning to the negotiating table, the Association wishes to urge its Employers, the Ministry of Health and its agencies, especially the Directors of the Ghana Christian Health Association and the administration from some Ghana Health Service facilities. , to stop all forms of intimidation tactics towards the members of the Association.
The GRNMA, he said, would not tolerate any form of intimidation or victimization by employers, agents or representatives at any facility.
“We want you to note that an attack on any registered nurse, midwife, medical assistant or certified anesthesiologist at any facility anywhere in the country is an attack on the entire fraternity in Ghana, and if that comes to our knowledge, we will deliver the answer.” Ms. Ofori-Ampofo said.
Ms. Ofori-Ampofo said that even the attempt by the Employer and the National Labor Commission to incite the courts against the Association regarding the citation of contempt and subsequently arrest her and the leadership amounted to serious intimidation, which was a sad situation knowing that they had not been delivered properly with the court order.
He insisted that although the members of the Association belonged to various political parties, they were clear that in terms of conditions of service it had nothing to do with politics.
He took the opportunity to apologize to all the patients and clients who had suffered in one way or another because of the strike and pleaded with them to understand that it was never his intention to put them in that situation.
He said that if caregivers weren’t happy with their terms of service, it would be impossible for them to provide quality services to clients.
The GRNMA and its allied associations, including the Ghana Medical Assistants Association and the Ghana Association of Certified Registered Anesthetists, withdrew their services on Monday, September 21, 2020, as part of their demands to improve conditions of service.
Their strike action was carried out despite an interim court order obtained by the NLC to prevent them from implementing their plan.
