Luis Suárez will join the Atlético de Madrid movement after the club agreed to a £ 5.5 million deal to sign him from Barcelona.
Former Liverpool star Suarez said a touching farewell to his Barça teammates on Wednesday when he left the club’s training ground for the last time.
The 33-year-old looked set to join Juventus this summer after being told he was not in the plans of new Camp Nou coach Ronald Koeman.
But after a proposal to change the Serie A giants failed, it became clear that Suárez was heading to Atlético, Barça’s rival in La Liga.
And both clubs have confirmed the news, announcing that they have reached an agreement on an exchange of 6 million euros (5.5 million pounds sterling).
Atlético released the news through the club’s Twitter page, while Barcelona issued a statement thanking the Uruguayan for his six seasons at Camp Nou.
“FC Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid have reached an agreement for the transfer of the player Luis Suárez. The Madrid club will pay FC Barcelona 6 million euros in variables,” the Catalan club announced.
“FC Barcelona wants to publicly express its gratitude to Luis Suárez for his commitment and dedication and wishes him all the best for the future.”
The formalities of his move appear to be completed on Thursday, and Barcelona will hold a press conference honoring their outgoing star on the same day.
He leaves as the club’s third all-time top scorer with 198 sensational goals in 283 appearances, behind only César and Lionel Messi.
He helped the Catalan giants win four league titles, four King’s Cups and one Champions League during his six years at the Camp Nou.
It is believed that he was eager to stay at the club, but had no choice but to leave given Barcelona’s insistence on removing him from his salary.
On Wednesday, Suarez was photographed collapsed in his car crying as he left Barca’s training ground for the last time after saying goodbye to close friends like Messi.
The forward is expected to sign a two-year contract with Atlético.
It remains to be seen when Suárez will make his Atlético debut, with his La Liga season beginning this weekend when he hosts Granada on Sunday.
