Sports Minister Isaac Asianah says Black Stars coach Charles Kwabla Akonnor must accept a pay cut before the ministry can pay off his nine-month back pay.
According to the minister, the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic has forced his office to insist on the salary cut of the former captain of Ghana.
Akonnor took over as Ghana’s coach in January this year with a monthly salary of $ 25,000, but has received nothing after nine months.
The former Black Stars captain has yet to manage his first game as the Black Stars coach since he replaced Kwesi Appiah due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
“I have told the coach to accept a pay cut in the Covid-19 period before we pay him… we cannot give him a full salary in this Covid era.
“So we are waiting for a response from the FA,” the minister told Asempa FM.
Asiamah revealed that the coach agreed in principle to accept the pay cut, and will do so as soon as the Ghana Football Association determines the percentage to be cut.
“The technician has agreed in principle to accept a salary cut in this Covid-19 era, it remains for the FA to come out with the modalities for us to pay him,” he added.
